Scam warning

GREENBRIER COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a scam.

According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, people are calling residents and identifying themselves as employees of the Dish Network. The caller reportedly tells the person they need an upgrade to their satellite box.

The customer is told that the software upgrade is free, but there is a one-time fee associated with the upgrade, which they offer to do over the phone. Deputies say the caller is knowledgeable in how the system operates.

A representative of the Dish Network told the Sheriff’s Office they do not perform upgrades over the telephone, and these callers are not associated with their company.

The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department urges the public to be cautious and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
