A change is coming to students at one McDowell County elementary school.  Superintendent Carolyn Falin confirmed Anawalt Elementary will close at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.

The West Virginia Board of Education approved the action during their meeting on Feb. 13.  It was an amendment to McDowell County’s Comprehensive Education Facilities Plan.  During the next school year, students will be redistricted to Kimball and Welch Elementary Schools.

“The decision to close and consolidate a school is never an easy decision for the superintendent or Board members to consider,” said Falin.  “Since 2012, the student population of Anawalt has declined from 114 to 56 students.”

Falin added that the mission of McDowell County Schools remains unchanged.  That mission is to “unleash the potential of every student every day.”
