Staff at Mount View High School welcomed new head coach, Maurice Gravely, to The Golden Knights football program Thursday afternoon. He replaces former head coach, Larry Thompson, who accepted the head coaching position at Wyoming East in January.
Gravely is returning to his alma mater for the position. He graduated Mount View in 1980 after excelling as an athlete in both football and basketball. It was that skill that allowed him to sign a letter of intent to play football at Marshall University, however, he transferred back to Concord University to finish his degree and graduate in 1984.
Gravely went on to play with the New England Patriots in the National Football League, finishing his professional career in the Arena Football League. He was later a scout for both leagues.
Coach Gravely stressed that he wants his players to excell academically as well as athletically. His main focus is to prepare young men for the future.
Gravely is a native of McDowell County, and grew up in Kimball.
