The City of Welch is mourning the loss of Mayor Reba Honaker, who passed away on May 30, 2019.  Donald Reed, who knew Reba, said she really cared for the city.

“She loved three things. She loved Charles. She loved her children. And she loved Welch, and in that order,” Reed said.

Reba Honaker grew up in McDowell County, right on Belcher Mountain. Before assuming the role as Mayor of Welch, she was a school teacher and also ran a flower shop. She spent some of her free time volunteering with many organizations in the area. Many people in the city knew her as a friend.

“Oh such a dedicated and wonderful person. She was a wonderful person. She was good, religious and civic-minded. She did a lot for our city and we really lost a good mayor,” said Elena Muckenfuss, who knew Reba.

“Well Reba, she never met a stranger. And Reba, she just made people feel welcome,” said friend of Reba’s, Jim Sizemore.

Reba’s funeral will be on June Monday, June 3, at the Fanning Funeral Home in Welch. The service starts at 11 a.m.
