Flat Top residents concerned about road conditions

Day by day, locals and drivers pass through Flat Top maneuvering a dangerous maze. Massive ditches and cracks can be found right along Beckley Road up to Ellison Ridge Road.

Local Wes Harvey said the wheels of cars, trucks, school buses, and motorcycles come very close to these edges when they have to make sharp turns.

“I’ve seen a lot of people almost go in and they run off the road occasionally,” Harvey said.

Sitting between two residencies, land owners of property next to the ditch used their own money for rocks to block the ditches and prevent accidents and run-off from rain that could turn into ice in the winter time as much as they can.

Resident Ron Thompson noted the most ironic part of the situation.

“The one ditch is directly across from the state road garage of Mercer County.”

People say Mercer County Flat Top Division of Highways dispatch have yet to take care of the problem after numerous requests. After we reached out to their main offices- no one has been able to return the call.

Although people living in this area understand that DOH is a busy organization, Thompson stressed that they want to keep local and visiting drivers safe from a problem that has existed on their streets for years.

“I understand places probably need stuff as well as we do,” Thompson said. “But this is where I pay my taxes and I want to keep my community out of danger.”
