Just how safe are the dams in our area?   That’s what county commissioners and members of the southern soil and conservation district in Mercer County want to find out.

Wednesday, conservationists were joined by County Commissioner Bill Archer for a tour of the dams throughout the county.

They’re inspecting structure and narrowing down the dams they feel could be a potential problem in the future.

The group specifically looked at the dam near exit 9, trying to find help to fix the problems with it.  Virgil Caldwell with the Southern Soil and Conservation District said the problems are multi-faceted.

“You got another problem with the PSD.  Looks like their sewer lines are starting to sink down through the spillway, said Caldwell.

A similar inspection was done in Raleigh County earlier this week and no major problems were found.
