In an emergency situation like a school shooting, a matter of seconds can mean life or death.
That is why Mercer County law enforcement will now carry key fobs so they can quickly enter any school in the county in an emergency.
The key fobs were distributed on Friday, Aug. 17, 2018 after the Mercer County Crisis Response Team meeting. The team includes representatives from all local law enforcement agencies.
Mercer County Prosecutor George Sitler assembled the group in May to coordinate and plan an emergency response in the event of a violent school incident.
“In the event of a school shooting it’s quite possible that no one would be available at the office to buzz an officer in and seconds are essential in that kind of incident,” Sitler said.
The fobs will be in every cruiser in the county. The team has also been working on adding school resource officers, and assessing school buildings to come up with emergency plans.
