New Details released in Lashmeet shooting investigation

State Troopers in Mercer County are investigating a shooting case which happened in the Lashmeet area on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017.  According to troopers, two people were injured during a fight at a home on Beeson Road.

When investigators arrived, a female victim told troopers that Scottie Coomes, Sr. was in the woods and had shot his son.  She had also been injured in the incident.  According court records, the woman told troopers Coomes had rammed their vehicle repeatedly before the victims were able to pull over and get inside the house.

Records state Scottie Coomes was able to get inside the house.  The victims told troopers that is when the three fought over the gun Coomes was armed with and the woman was injured.  The two victims said they ran into the woods to hide and the male victim was shot in the neck.

Troopers were able to find Scottie Coomes driving in the area with a loaded 30-30 caliber rifle.  He was arrested on charges of attempted murder, two counts of malicious wounding, two counts of wanton endangerment, burglary, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a home and other charges.

The female victim was treated for a broken bone.  The male victim is still in serious condition at a local hospital.


UPDATE  12/06/2017 8:15 p.m.

Scottie Coomes was arraigned on Wednesday in connection with the shooting that happened in Lashmeet. Coomes appeared before Susan Honaker at the Mercer County Courthouse for allegedly shooting his son at their home.

Coomes is facing multiple charges including attempted murder, two counts of malicious wounding and two counts of wanton endangerment. 

Coomes was placed on $100,000 bond and remains at Southern Regional Jail. The victim remains at Princeton Community Hospital with serious injuries.


A shooting investigation is under way in Mercer County.  According to dispatchers, a person was shot Tuesday, Dec. 5 at around 9:30 p.m. on Beeson Road in the Lashmeet area.

West Virginia State Police, Mercer County Deputies and Princeton Rescue Squad responded to the scene.

Mercer County Deputies said Scottie Coomes was taken into police custody and a family member of Coomes was shot.  That person was taken to Princeton Community Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

State Police are handling the investigation.  Troopers said a female victim was also involved in the incident. She reportedly received minor injuries.
