MATOAKA, WV (WVNS) — What investigators believe started as a target practice now has them looking for the people behind the trigger.

Mercer County Deputies responded to a shots fired call Friday afternoon at Lashmeet Matoaka Elementary School. Deputies said they found targets nearby and believe two or more people were shooting guns in the area, but the bullets went past the targets and hit the school building. Deputies report finding nearly 20 shell casings.

Deputies said this happened after school hours Friday, April 26, 2019, but added staff and students were still in the building. No injuries were reported.

Deputies said they believe this is an isolated incident and the school was not targeted. They are investigating and are looking for the people responsible.
