UPDATE (AP):  A trial date has been set for a West Virginia couple charged with murder and neglect after authorities said their toddler appeared to have been starved to death.

The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports Christy Moore and Corey Moore are now scheduled to stand trial May 14. The delay was due to Corey Moore’s attorney requesting a mental evaluation that’s set for Tuesday.

A Mercer County Sheriff’s report says the couple told authorities the toddler had a cold and lost nearly 20 pounds. Detective Sgt. S.A. Sommers says the parents told authorities the boy refused to eat.

Prosecutor George Sitler has said the couple’s three other children also appeared malnourished.  Relatives John and Janet Adkins have been charged with similar offenses.

Authorities expect to receive the toddler’s autopsy report this week.

ORIGINAL STORY: Two people are facing charges in connection to the death of a toddler, according to deputies.

Mercer County Deputies arrested Christy and Corey Moore on Thursday, November 8, 2018. Both are charged with child neglect resulting in death.

Deputies said Christy and Corey were parents of the victim who was 21-months-old.

Court documents state Christy took the child to the emergency room on Thursday. Doctors told officers when Christy arrived, the child was malnourished, weighing only 14 pounds, pale and unresponsive. Doctors tried air lifting the child to another hospital, but he passed away before they could do so.

The parents told investigators the child became sick around the beginning of the month and had lost between 14 to 18 pounds. When detectives asked the parents why they did not take the toddler to the doctor, they said it was a “mistake.” Chief Deputy Joe Parks, told 59 News, this is a complete tragedy.

“It is one of those things that’s easily averted and will all the programs that are out there, especially in mercer county, I really do not see how someone could excuse it as a parent,” Parks said.

Detectives are exploring the possibility that more charges may be filed relating to the three sibling of the child who died. The believe those children may be suffering malnutrition as well.

A preliminary hearing will be held for Christy and Corey Moore within the next 10 days. Prosecutors expect to be presenting this case to the February term of the Mercer County grand jury.
