12 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018 UPDATE:  The trial for a man who was accused of holding a family at gunpoint wrapped up in Mercer County on Wednesday.  Harry Smith was charged with Wanton Endangerment, Brandishing, Domestic Assault, Kidnapping and Conspiracy.

A jury returned a guilty verdict on Wednesday evening.  He could face life in prison when he is sentenced.  That hearing is scheduled for Dec. 11, 2018.

ORIGINAL STORY: A Bluefield man is facing a number of criminal charges including kidnapping, burglary and wanton endangerment after deputies said he broke into a family’s home and held them at gunpoint.

Harry Lee Smith Junior, of Bluefield, was arrested on Monday and is being held in the Southern Regional Jail.

According to deputies, they responded to a shots fired call at a home on Cove Branch Road in Bluefield, Mercer County on Monday.
The victims told deputies Smith broke into their home, held their family at gunpoint and collected all of the cell phones inside of the home. One of the victims said while Smith wasn’t paying attention, she ran and hid behind the home- fearing it was the only way she had a chance to survive.

She said she was eventually able to run to another family member’s home to call for help. On her way, she said she heard shots fired while other family members were still inside the home. From a distance, the victim stated she saw Smith walking a family member with a gun to their head while also dragging another family member by their arm.

Deputies said when they arrived on scene, they found Smith holding one of the victims with a gun pointed at them and that he was using them as a shield. After negotiating with Smith for more than 30 minutes, deputies were able to get the gun from Smith. They said the gun was fully loaded.

On Smith, deputies said they found a plastic bag with zip-ties, a machete, short club, and rolls of duct tape.

No bond was set for Smith.
