A man in a stolen side by side ATV leads a deputy in Pocahontas County on a chase through town.  It started in the early morning hours on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018.

Deputy Brian Shinaberry spotted the vehicle being driven illegally in the Town of Marlinton.  That is when he attempted to pull the suspect over.  The suspect drove away leading to a chase through the streets and alleys of the town until they got to Marlinton Elementary School.

According to the Pocahontas County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the suspect then tried to run over Deputy Shinaberry.  That is when he fired several rounds and hit the driver of the ATV.

The suspect fled to the other side of Marlinton where he crashed on First Avenue.  He was identified as James Woods, 26, of Marlinton, WV.

First responders took Woods to Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.  He was later taken to Roanoke.  His condition was not released.

Investigators said the side by side was stolen from a peron who lives in Marlinton.  The suspect is also believed to have broken into the Little General store.  Items taken from the store were found in the ATV.

The case is being investigated by the West Virginia State Police.
