Beckley armed robbery suspect leads officers on high-speed chase, crashes into car

Raleigh County

BECKLEY/CHARLESTON, W. Va. (WVNS) —    A robbery and high speed chase land a Virginia man is behind bars on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017.

Beckley Police said Horace Johnson, 38, from Virginia, held up a man who was unloading his truck at the Hampton Inn on Harper Road in Beckley.  It happened at around 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.  Investigators said Johnson took the Dodge Durango and drove off.

Troopers with the Turnpike Detachment of the West Virginia State Police located the truck traveling north on I-77.  That began a chase which stretched across several counties.  Johnson reportedly exceeded speeds of 120 mph while on the interstate.  The pursuing units requested spike strips which were  deployed near the 96-97 mile marker in Kanawha County.

The suspect’s stolen vehicle struck the strips which eventually caused him to lose control and rear ended another vehicle.

Both vehicles went off the road and flipped over onto railroad tracks.    A woman, a young boy, and a dog were in the other car and were also taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

A weapon was recovered from the scene. Johnson faces potential charges of armed robbery, plus charges stemming from the pursuit and crash. He may also be wanted on charges from Virginia and probation violations.
