A man who was taken from the Southern Regional Jail for medical treatment had a few short hours of freedom on Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, before he was recaptured. Jeffrey Johnson was taken to Raleigh General Hospital for care, when he escaped from custody at around 10 a.m.  Details on how he was able to get away are limited, but police said a correctional officer from the jail accompanies a prisoner at all times during these situations.

Officers with the Beckley Police, Raleigh County Sheriff’s Deputies and State Troopers were able to quickly set up a perimeter and begin a search for Johnson.  He was found in a wooded area off of New River Drive at around 1 p.m.

Johnson was being held in the Southern Regional Jail on charges from multiple counties in West Virginia.  He could now face more charges following his escape.  According to a release from Beckley Police, neither Johnson nor any officers or jail personnel were injured during the escape or capture.
