A local gym owner is making it his goal to combat obesity in the region.
For David Chinn, transforming people’s lifestyles is one of his main goals. Chinn is the owner of LA East Fitness Center in Beckley. He said his mission is to get the people of West Virginia worried about their health.
“If they really want to change their life, I have no doubts that we can change their life for a better life,” Chinn said.
According to the most recent Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, West Virginia has the highest adult obesity rate in the country, at 38.1 percent. Given these shocking statistics, Chinn said it is time for a change. That is why he created something called the ‘Emergency Plan.’ He explained he is tired of people giving excuses as to why they are not at the gym.
“You have to exercise your body. When it becomes complacent, so does your mind, so does your blood flow, and eating healthy and exercising. I mean we are not talking extremes, but for the lack of that is one of the biggest problems in the state of West Virginia,” Chinn said.
The ‘Emergency Plan’ allows unhealthy adult females over 200 pounds and adult males over 280 pounds to apply for a free 90 day fitness trial. He said after a number of different trial runs with different programs, this program is starting to catch on.
“Just since yesterday, I already have forty seven applications,” Chinn said.
Chinn said there are guidelines and an interview process to get accepted into the plan. If a person is showing progress, he will extend the free trial for another 30 days, as long as he or she is trying.
