In light of March being colon cancer awareness month, a local hospital is doing what they can to help people get their check-ups.

According to Dr. Paul Conley, colon cancer is the number two cancer killer in the United States. That is why Plateau Medical Center set up at the Crossroads Mall on Saturday afternoon to remind people over the age of 45, how important it is to get frequently checked.

Dr. Conley explained colon cancer is preventable and can be beat by frequent screening.

“When you look at colon cancer deaths, we actually had a 30% reduction in the last ten years and that reduction has been attributed to colonoscopy polypectomy, because during this test we can remove pre cancerous growths called polyps,” Conley said.

Conley recommends scheduling an appointment with your local doctor to get a colonoscopy if you have not yet.
