Senate Bill 1 passed in the WV Senate Thursday morning. The bill would provide for free community college tuition to students.

The bill acts as a way to provide better access to higher education and technical training.

President Bonny Copenhaver at New River Technical Community College said only 28 percent of people in the state have a bachelor’s degree. She said giving people this opportunity could be better for the economy.

“I am so excited about this bill. I think this provides an opportunity to the citizens of the state to be able to come to school. Those students who didn’t think they’d be able to afford a college degree, this puts it in their grasp,” Copenhaver said.

The bill currently awaits the Governor’s signature.
