Road work in Beckley impacts businesses

Raleigh County

The Beckley Bypass and part of Robert C Byrd Drive have seen a lot of road work in the last few months. Bill Baker, Chairman of the Beckley Transportation Authority, said travel routes in Beckley will be impacted as a result of the road work.

“People coming from the southern part to get across Beckley or to get into downtown Beckley, so hopefully a little more patience. Same thing is going to happen going south. Construction there is going to create a lot of problems and a lot of hold ups. But once it’s finished it’s going to be worth the wait,” Baker said.

The King Coal Chevrolet Pre-Owned car lot has been effected by lane closures on Robert C Byrd Drive. Chase Barton, General Manager, said there was a time when people could not even get in to give King Coal their business as a result of the road work.

“I think I was here early that morning and they had both sides of our business on Robert C Byrd Drive blocked. So it was kind of impossible to do anything on those days,” Barton said.

Barton said he and other King Coal employees are excited to see the end results of the road work and how that will positively impact getting around in Beckley. But, he also said he is not too thrilled about the fact that people cannot easily access different businesses on Robert C Byrd.

“Yeah it’s a tough battle and I don’t know what they could do in the future. I know our neighbors at Little General and Wendys have all shared the same frustration and I guess anything we can all do to make it better would be worth exploring,” Barton said.

Barton said he has been in contact with officials, who did promise him a couple more weeks of road work.
