It is one thing to call a new arena your home, but for WVU Tech, it is a whole different story when your court is underneath more than 50 years of history. “The convention center itself is a fantastic home for us,” said athletic director Kenny Howell. “We’re very grateful to have the partnership that we have with them.”
Howell is still in awe of Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center’s large 2800-seat capacity, a size unheard of for an N.A.I.A. competitor.
“Most places are playing at high school gymnasiums or smaller municipals,” Howell said. “Where we have the access to the best venue in the county. It’s our home.”
Howell sees the reality of sharing the venue with local high school teams a golden opportunity for recruiting future bears.
“Those students are getting the front-door welcome to our institution,” Howell said. “Hopefully that will re-energize the folks to come out and see some basketball games and be interested in our institution, maybe as potential students down the road.”
Although the contract between the school and decades-old facility is short-term, Howell is open to something longer, given how much both parties have benefited from this partnership.
“The agreement itself has been so comfortable that I can’t see a reason why wouldn’t want to continue this for years to come.”
A historic gem already writing its next chapter.
