Sad news for the people of Wyoming County as a beloved newspaper reporter John Conley passed away on Saturday June 16.

John was a recognizable face in Wyoming County. He worked at the Independent Herald for well over a decade. A native of Mullen’s, John loved to cover the all the positive things in his community.

Jim Cook, a friend of Conley’s, said he will be missed and loved how John would always tell the facts about stories.

“He was laid back easy going. He was very well loved in the county. I like that he promoted the good things of the county in his stories. He didn’t put in his own opinions or his own agenda he went with the facts and he liked to highlight the positives around here,” said Cook.

John’s friends, Michael Knotts and Carlton Cox, said he was a kind man that will be greatly missed especially during football season.

“He cared about this community he cared about everybody. I had the privilege of working with him several times and he worked with me giving me stuff for I do the play by play on the radio he was always really gracious to help us and just an all around good guy,” Knotts said.

“He would come up to me and say hey, Carl I wasn’t able to get to this game can I use a couple of your pictures, and I said sure anytime you want John you can use a picture. But every time he would come up to me and say can I use your picture. He would never just go ahead and use it. It’s just missing him being at ball games. Always see him at basketball, football, baseball. Didn’t matter,” Cox said.

A memorial booth will be set up on Sunday, June 23, at Wyoming County Days to remember John. People will be able to write their memories of John in a book for his sister.
