GHENT, WV – West Virginia State Police say a child was killed in the interstate crash that shut down part of I-77 on April 24, 2018.

Sgt. C.F. Kane with the Turnpike Detachment of State Police said the victim was a 4-year-old boy from Kentucky. The boy’s 24-year-old mother was also in the car, but she sustained only minor injuries, and was treated at Raleigh General Hospital.

Kane said the mother was driving south on I-77 near the Ghent exit at around 5:30 p.m. She was behind the wheel of a black Chevrolet Impala when she crossed the median into the northbound lanes of the interstate and slammed into a rock wall. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reconstruction teams are working to determine what happened at the scene, but Kane says this remains an active investigation. No charges have been filed.
