Beckley senior bowling league puts on surprise birthday party for member turning 100

Raleigh County

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Every Thursday in Beckley a group of Seniors gather at the local bowling alley, but Thursday, May 2, 2019 was a little different. This time they were celebrating a league member’s 100th birthday with a surprise party ahead of their final tournament.

Faustine Tench has been bowling for 30 years with the Senior Bowling League in Beckley, and she leaves a big impression on the people she meets. Her friend Mary Dixon said she is a special part of their lives.

“She has, over the years, written me letters, given me encouragement as far as don’t give up keep trying, you know things will get better. She is truly an amazing person,” Dixon said.

Her friends spent three weeks planning the party, all the while keeping it a secret from Faustine.

“I’m just so happy. I’m happy more than happy. The best day ever. (I) never had such happiness in my life. It’s just a joy to know people love you,” Tench said.

Along with bowling every Thursday she also walks from her house to church every Sunday. She said there’s a secret to staying 100 years young.

“Serve the Lord and keep your mind positive. And work, work work never hurt nobody. If people lazy they don’t work but you can work and be happy,” Tench said.

Faustine proves that age is just a number not the definition of who we are.
