Guests arrived early to check-in and get their boarding passes at Raleigh County Memorial Airport, ready to board flight 3405: Countour Airline’s inaugural flight out of Beckley.
The trip kicked off a new weekly schedule where a Contour Airline plane will start in Parkersburg, WV and fly to Beckley, before taking all passengers, like Richard Smith, on the 40 minute ride to Charlotte.
“Its a nice flight,” Smith said. “It’s the first time we’ve had jet service out of Parkersburg for. I don’t even remember when, but I just wanted to get on the first fight and try it.”
With the highest plane ticket costing a passenger $99, the charter plane-turned commercial airline comes with plenty of leg room and complimentary services.
Passengers are allowed their first checked bag free, as well as one free carry on suitcase that can be stored in the overhead compartments, and a personal item that can be stowed under the seat.
Countour Airlines will do twelve round-trips a week en route to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, where Executive Vice President of Flight Operations for Contour Airlines, Lee Harris, told 59 News many guests transfer to a different airline.
“Even if they just want to run in and out for the day, that’s one thing we say we have the frequency that people want to fly,” Harris said.
All apart of the the main goal Contour Airline hopes to accomplish in small places like Beckley .
“Part of the essential air service is for communities that have been traditionally isolated to have access to a larger community where they can go,” Harris said. “Beckley is one of those communities.”
On December 22, Contour Airlines will begin routes to Tampa from Beckley as well. People can purchase tickets and learn more information about flights on contourairlines.com
