The annual Draft Horse Pull happened at the State Fair of West Virginia on Friday, Aug. 17, 2018. This event draws in big crowds every year.
Horses competed in a light weight and a heavy weight bracket. The horses that pulled the farthest won a cash prize for their owners .
Kent Leonhardt is the West Virginia Agriculture Commissioner. He explained what this event is all about.
“It is to simulate the draft horse in the old times when they use to log or pull sleds or move stones. During the old times when we did not have all those machines to pull these things, draft horses did most of the work,” Leonhardt said.
Leonhardt said that before any of the horses compete they are checked out by veterinarians that are on the fairgrounds to make sure they are all healthy.
