Town secretary accused of assault at council meeting in Pax

PAX, WV (WVNS) — Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a Pax town official for an alleged assault at Town Hall.

Pax resident and former mayor, Shirley Roberts, said she went to a public council meeting Monday, July 15, 2019. Roberts claimed she was told she was not allowed to speak at the meeting and when she asked why, an argument escalated between her and Pax secretary, Shelley Meredith.

Court documents state Meredith charged toward Roberts with her hands raised as if she were going to hit her. Roberts claimed someone else in the room told Meredith to stop, but the incident made her fear for her safety.

“I’d like to live in a nice, clean town like we had six years ago, but I don’t feel like I can go to the council meetings now because I feel like if I go to those meetings I might be in physical danger,” Roberts said.

Deputies charged Meredith with misdemeanor assault. The alleged incident happened before the meeting began
