Friday, July 2, 2021 at 9:45 p.m. UPDATE: GREEN SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WVNS) — The eastbound lanes of I-64 are open following a fatal accident. Traffic heading westbound was rerouted along the North State Route 20 from the Green Sulphur Springs exit to the Hinton exit during the reconstruction.

According to State Police, the westbound lanes opened at 11:15 p.m.

Firefighters told 59News that because of the nature of the accident, first responders and police are preserving the scene to try and recreate the accident and gather as much information as possible. That information will be assessed by WV State Police and the National Highway Safety Board to determine the cause of accidents like this one.

This is the second accident and third fatality in two days in the same area of I-64. There is no word yet on the identify of the person who died in Friday’s crash.

Friday, July 2, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. UPDATE: GREEN SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WVNS) — Traffic is being redirected at Exit 133, Bragg/Pluto Road on I-64 eastbound. Drivers are not able to get to the Sandstone exit as emergency crews continue to clean the scene of a fatal accident.

Friday, July 2, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. UPDATE: GREEN SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WVNS) — All lanes of I-64 remain shut down following a fatal accident in Summers County. Crews with the West Virginia Department of Transportation are urging drivers to get off at the Hinton/Sandstone Exit if traveling eastbound.

GREEN SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WVNS) — All westbound lanes of I-64 are closed following an accident in Summers County.

According to Summers County Dispatchers, the accident happened near mile marker 142 westbound. Multiple cars were involved. Investigators told 59News one person died and another person is being flown to a local hospital.

Crews are currently on scene.
