BLUEFIELD, WV (WVNS) – Monday, October 28, 2019 6:30 p.m. UPDATE: Mercer County Deputies are investigating a shooting at Legendz Bar &Grill on Airport Road in Bluefield, hours before the building was engulfed in flames.

Detective Sgt. Steven Sommers said, “About 40 minutes after midnight a resident near the bar called 911 reporting they heard shots that had been fired.”

Deputies said a person allegedly shot another person twice at the business on Saturday. The victim is in stable condition.

Sommers said deputies found shell casings at the scene and investigators believe they recovered the gun Monday morning.

“I’m going to submit the evidence to the crime lab to confirm. There is a suspect, we are still following leads and its still under investigation,” said Sommers.

Just a few hours after the shooting, the bar went up in flames.

Around 7 a.m. multiple fire departments responded to the scene where they found flames burning through the roof of the building. They were later able to contain the blaze and no one was injured.

Sommers said investigators already collected evidence before the fire, and the owner does not believe the fire was connected to the shooting.

“We weren’t able to find witnesses. I did speak with the owner of the bar to see if anything happened inside that could have led to the shooting and also asked about surveillance video,” Sommers said. “They did have cameras but said they didn’t record.”

Investigators with the WV state fire marshals office are working to determine a cause.
