12/6/22 6:00 P.M. — People living at Oakmont Greene apartments in Raleigh County were startled Tuesday morning when a car crashed through an apartment building.
A Chevy Equinox blew through the front door of the 400 Block of Pamela street in Mount Hope, destroying the entire front wall of the apartment after the vehicle’s brakes failed.
Nobody was injured in the crash – but those inside the house said they were still shaken up.
“Well I was in the shower and I came downstairs and there was my grandmother’s car in the house. I don’t know, I was just shocked and surprised that it happened. Just an unfortunate event right before Christmas. Bad luck, I guess,” said resident Jacob Scarbro.
Scarbro’s dog, a dachshund named Toby, was the only one downstairs when the crash happened. The dog was trapped under bricks and wreckage, but Scarbro was able to free Toby with no injuries.
Hailey Ferguson, a friend of the family, was asleep upstairs in the building at the time. She says the sound of glass smashing and bricks falling that woke her up was unlike anything she had ever heard before.
“I was like, just in shock. I didn’t know what to do,” Ferguson told 59News.
Scarbro says the safety of his grandmother in the car was his top priority, and he was extremely relieved to find her unharmed when he walked downstairs. But now he and his family are left trying to pick up the pieces in time for the holidays.
“I was worried about her. She’s okay and everything. But I’m just worried about where we’re going to go and how is this going to get fixed, you know?” said Scarbro.
