Monday, July 27, 2020 5:15 p.m. UPDATE: Monica Hartwell was arraigned before Magistrate Poe in Mercer County on Monday, July 27, 2020. She faces first degree murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing Michael Walker.

A criminal complaint released after her arraignment stated Hartwell and Walker lived together at a home in Lashmeet. That is where state troopers from the Princeton Detachment were dispatched on Sunday afternoon after reports of a shooting.

According to the complaint, when troopers arrived, they found Michael Walker’s body under a bush next to the front porch of the house. They claimed he was not moving and was bleeding from his head.

Trooper Alan Christian told 59 News Walker was pronounced dead at the scene and Hartwell complied with troopers.

“They arrested Monica and located a shot gun that was used in the shooting,” Christian added.

They also spoke to witnesses, including one who lived with the pair. The complaint stated they told troopers the two were drinking two hours leading up to the incident, adding Walker had declining mental health and was ‘running his mouth, talking like he was God, Jesus, or the holy spirit.”

Hartwell allegedly threatened to kill Walker before and debated the idea on the phone with a family member, saying ‘he was a demon from hell and the county would be a better place without him,’ and she loved him, but finally saw who he was, killing him to ‘protect her community.’

“This murder seems to be pretty cut and dry.” Trooper Christian added. “But like I said, we still have a lot of work to do on it.”

Hartwell’s preliminary hearing is set for July 30, 2020 at 1:00 p.m.
