Afternoon storms return today

Weather

DISCUSSION: We repeat a similar song and dance today, with more afternoon rain possible. We might push those showers in the mountains a little bit closer to the I-77 corridor. Either way, expect another near normal day with highs near 80 degrees and some spotty pop up showers in the afternoon. We aren’t overly unsettled, but it will be enough to warrant keeping an umbrella close. Humidity will also be on the higher side.

I feel like a bit of a broken record at this point, but the same message is necessary. Some storms could become strong and produce some gusty winds, though organized severe storms are unlikely. Small hail will be possible in some of these storms. There is a threat for some localized high water with any heavy downpours. Storm motion will be slow, meaning storms may drop a lot of rain in one spot in a short period of time.

Some rain possible tonight.

Cloud cover, showers, and fog are all possible tonight. Low temperatures will fall into the 60s for most. Not exactly the nicest night out there, but not a total washout either. Generally calm winds will be found throughout the entire area.

Our unsettled, moisture rich pattern sticks around into Saturday. It will be another day with highs near 80 and passing showers and storms. Again, no flooding and no severe weather are expected, but some pop up showers in the afternoon cannot be ruled out. If you’re outdoors, just keep an eye to the sky. Some spots could stay totally dry.

Sunday looks a bit unsettled as well. Our pattern is pretty slow moving, which keeps the moisture around and allows for more showers and storms through the afternoon. Overall, the severe chances are pretty limited and these storms will just be some run of the mill summer pop ups. Flooding still will not be much of a concern on Sunday. Highs end up in the 80s.

Monday actually looks pretty good as of now. We finally get the unsettled conditions to shift a bit further east, meaning our chances for drier weather increase. Since we do not have a big, dominant high pressure system, we still run the risk of firing off a shower or two in the afternoon. As a whole, though, Monday should be quieter with highs in the 80s.

A carbon copy of Monday is expected Tuesday. No big changes to the forecast are expected since the overall pattern is so similar. All things considered, this is not a bad way to kick off August. Flooding chance remains low and the severe weather risk is also quite low.

An organized system to our north will bring another front through by Wednesday. Showers and storms make their return to the Two Virginias. It’s a bit far out to say exactly what to expect, but the pattern definitely favors some unsettled conditions and more rain. At this point, we may need to be more concerned with localized high water.

Thursday brings more of the same. Showers and storms are looking more likely as we get later into the afternoon. Highs will be near normal again. Our pattern may try to become a bit more progressive late in the week, so our shower chances might drop back a bit.

If we end up with drier air building in, Friday will be decent. We still will not have a dominant high pressure system, but at least we trend a bit sunnier. Highs will again be near normal for this time of year. There are no big warm ups or cool downs in the forecast at this point.

July has come to a close! On average, it is one of our warmest and wettest months. However, we aren’t done with summer that fast, as August is bound to bring us plenty more 80 degree days and humidity alongside it. As we approach the late summer season, stormy weather remains a hazard on our radar. At this point in the year, our atmosphere is very warm at the surface as well as aloft, which usually helps us steer clear of too much severe weather. However, our attention will remain focused on potential flooding and high water with any stronger systems that move through the region.
