Chilly start but plenty of sun in store for today

Weather

A FROST ADVISORY WILL BE IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT UNTIL 9 AM THURSDAY FOR TAZEWELL, MERCER, SUMMERS, MONROE, AND GREENBRIER COUNTIES.. TEMPERATURES DROPPING CLOSE TO FREEZING WILL RESULT IN AREA OF FROST THAT COULD KILL OFF SENSITIVE PLANTS LEFT OUTSIDE.

FROST ADVISORY IN EFFECT WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY MORNING.

DISCUSSION: After this chilly start, our temperatures will be pretty comfortable and close to average by the afternoon. Highs should top off in the 50s under mostly sunny skies. It should be a pretty nice day for an outdoor hike as long as you wear long sleeves. More and more fall colors are continuing to show up across the two Virginias this week!

Pretty nice day overall.

Clear skies will continue on overnight and winds will become very light. With these conditions in place, temperatures will take another big drop tonight as lows make it into the 30s. With some spots close to the freezing mark, frost could develop across the area and pose a threat to vegetation. Regardless, it’ll set up for another chilly start heading into Thursday morning.

If today doesn’t look warm enough for you, we bring back the mid to upper 60s on Thursday. Sunshine will be back with high pressure in control for both days. This should make for a pleasant, though short, stretch of fall weather before a more unsettled pattern returns heading into this weekend.

After the rain we received on Sunday morning and the showers that moved through Tuesday morning we expect to see some improvements to our drought situation. The new monitor won’t come out until Thursday, but I think some of us will finally drop out of the severe drought. This is great news!

Current Drought Monitor

Another strong disturbance looks to arrive by the weekend and bring us more showers. Models are starting to agree better on the timing of the rain. With high pressure exiting the area late Friday, the most of the day should be dry with temperatures in the 60s. Though, unsettled conditions could come later on.

For now expect just a few showers Friday night and a better chance for rain on Saturday. Temperatures on Saturday will be cooler in the upper 50s and with the clouds and rain around you will want warm costumes for Tailgate Halloween in Uptown Beckley. Be sure to stop by the 59 News tent and say “hi” to Heidi, Brandon and Riley!

Fall colors are starting to appear across the region. We are still not quite at peak color, but you may notice more spots are starting to see the change. Most of the area will see peak colors by late October. The further north you head, the quicker leaves change. With the dry spell we’ve been dealing with leaves can potentially fall before they even reach their peak colors, so some spots could be lackluster this year.

Temperature Outlook for Winter 2019-2020
Precip outlook for Winter 2019-2020

The 2019-2020 Winter Outlook has been released. Southern WV is expected to have a winter with above average temperatures and above average precipitation. This doesn’t mean we won’t see snow or any bitterly cold snaps. While temperatures are expected to be generally above average, we could still have days where temperatures are well below average. This outlook can’t predict big snow storms, or even how much snow we see. With above average precipitation in the forecast it could mean we see more rain AND snow. It just depends on the individual systems and their timing. Only time will tell!
