Rain Returns for Weekend

Weather

DISCUSSION: Football this week actually will be a bit warmer as temperatures are expected to stay in the 50s. Light jackets and sweatpants should be enough to keep you comfortable enough from kickoff until the final whistle. Cloudy conditions will be in place and we could see a few showers out there tonight. They would be fairly light in nature, but an umbrella wouldn’t be bad to have on hand.

Football Forecast

Another strong disturbance looks to arrive on Saturday and bring us more showers. This area of low pressure looks to move to our west on Saturday. The warm front associated with this system will bring some showers into the region, mainly west of I 77, but I would grab the umbrella no matter where you are heading. This initial rain will come during the early part of the day before we get stuck in the dry slot for the afternoon and evening. We could actually see a decent bit of dry time through the middle of the day as a result, which would be pretty nice for our weekend activities.

The Day Ahead

Temperatures on Saturday will be in the 60s. With the clouds and rain around you will want warm costumes for Tailgate Halloween in Uptown Beckley. Be sure to stop by the 59 News tent and say “hi” to Heidi, Brandon and Riley! If you are heading to Hinton’s Railroad Days, it will likely be a bit drier, however still cloudy and cool.

The heaviest rain looks to move in by Saturday night and early Sunday morning as a cold front trucks on through. We still need showers to help with our drought status and these showers will certainly be beneficial. Rain gradually dries up by the afternoon and temperatures are back in the mid 60s to low 70s late Sunday afternoon.

Weekend Outlook

The beginning of the week just brings small rain chances. Showers won’t be widespread Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, but some light showers are possible. Temperatures stay in the 60s until Wednesday where cooler air starts to build in.

A shot of cold air remains in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. Highs will be stuck in the 50s both days. Halloween on Thursday is looking cool with temperatures in the 50s. Some showers are possible as well so make sure the kids have warmer costumes for all trick or treat activities.

Wetter conditions through this month have helped our drought conditions greatly. The new drought monitor was released this morning and none of our southern West Virginia counties are under a severe drought. However, we are still under a moderate drought (D1) across the majority of the area. More rainfall through this weekend and over the next month should help to eradicate this drought completely.

Latest Drought Monitor.

Fall colors are starting to appear across the region. We are almost at peak color. With the dry spell we’ve been dealing with leaves can potentially fall before they even reach their peak colors, so some spots could be lackluster this year.

Temperature Outlook for Winter 2019-2020
Precip outlook for Winter 2019-2020

The 2019-2020 Winter Outlook has been released. Southern WV is expected to have a winter with above average temperatures and above average precipitation. This doesn’t mean we won’t see snow or any bitterly cold snaps. While temperatures are expected to be generally above average, we could still have days where temperatures are well below average. This outlook can’t predict big snow storms, or even how much snow we see. With above average precipitation in the forecast it could mean we see more rain AND snow. It just depends on the individual systems and their timing. Only time will tell!
